Providing Hospice Care to the Hudson Valley’s Veterans

For the past decade, Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc. has partnered with the Veteran’s Administration to provide top-quality care for patients who have served our country. This year Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc. is proud to announce we’ve been renewed as a Level 5 Partner in the We Honor Veterans program, created by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and Department of Veteran Affairs.

Maintaining this specialized care for veterans has resulted in Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc. working diligently to provide education for staff and volunteers, build and maintain an organizational capacity for quality care for veterans, and sustain a close relationship with VA medical centers and other veteran organizations. One aspect of our care is a Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer program, which allows each patient to be paired with a veteran who can provide unique support, bedside reminiscing, participation in veteran recognitions, and the opportunity to explore obtaining awarded medals not previously received.

Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Inc. also provides an Honor Salute Program for our veterans, where we recognize hospice patients with a special ceremony of their choosing. Each honoree is presented with a pin, framed certificate of service, a patriotic lap quilt/blanket, and a card from a child thanking them for their service. Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. is proud to support veterans and all of our patients with end-of-life care. Our services are available to any individual who is given a prognosis of six months or fewer. This care is available in the comfort of the patient’s home, in the nursing facility where the patient resides, or in our own Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. Hospice care focuses on treating the whole person rather than just their symptoms. Our services include nursing care, pain and symptom management, patient/family instructions on care, social worker services, and much more.
