How Hospice Donations Directly Benefit Hudson Valley Families
2020 will be remembered for many things, but one of them will be the way that people rallied around their communities. We’ve looked after each other, even while social distancing. We’ve supported small businesses, disinfected regularly, and made our voices heard. We’ve done all of this to protect quality of life for others under unprecedented circumstances. The past six months, however, have reminded the public of what we at Hospice have never forgotten – quality of life extends to end of life. In the absence of public fundraising events, Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties has relied on the generosity of the community in order to continue providing end-of-life care, as well as emotional and spiritual support. These donations to Hospice have directly helped Hudson Valley families through this difficult time.
Gifts to Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties allow our teams of nurses, doctors, social workers, aides, and volunteers to provide hospice care wherever it is needed. This includes at-home care, care at nursing facilities and group homes, and care at our very own Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. In the case of the Kaplan Residence, donations are used to operate and maintain home-like amenities such as private bedrooms and bathrooms, common areas for family gatherings, a nutrition center and kitchen where family meals can be prepared and shared, and even a children’s play area. The residence also provides resources for managing grief and stress, including a meditation room, beautiful grounds and a spa to bring comfort to our patients.
Emotional and spiritual care is a hallmark of Hospice services and is provided to patients and their families regardless of location. Hospice gifts support programs like grief support groups and the Children’s Grieving Center. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, these donations have allowed us to reach even more community members through online bereavement services at a time when emotional support is so badly needed. Through charitable contributions, Hospice is also able to provide care for the uninsured and under insured.
